FORWARD At Sea Without a Sail
A pier is a folly, a highway to nowhere. Whether lined with fishermen or filled with the cries and clattering of a roller coaster, whether thick with the aromas of hot dogs and fries or freshly gutted fish, they are there for nothing but the plea¬sure of humanity. They didn’t all begin that way. Piers are not quays or wharves, but many originally were. Most piers in Southern California started life as wharves where steamers could tie up, before the coastal shipping lines were supersed¬ed by railroads and highways. Gold in the 1850s, black gold from the 1890s, the silver screen since the 1910s — there has always been a glistening dream to lure people to Califor¬nia, but perhaps none so powerful as the promise of a long pleasure shore, where work is play and enterprise a spiritual adventure. On the day I visited Newport Pier just after Christ¬mas such a fierce wind was blowing that the tide raced under the pier like a fast river. Strollers became staggerers, shield¬ing their eyes from scouring sand. Trash cans gave up their lids to the wind. The whole pier trembled like the sound box of a viola, and mist seethed from the piled up white breakers. On a day like this, what is a pier for? For getting out to sea in a blazing bright storm without ever leaving land. For looking back at the hills and town as you never could from shore. And for feeling O.K. about doing nothing in particular. “Mostly, out on the pier you understand that you’re not really on the way to somewhere else. You’re already there,” is how Jean Femling put it in “Great Piers of California.”
A pier is the natural home of courting couples, too, who cavort as the wind whips their hair and coats about, of elderly couples who try to stroll sedately, of families who are out for multigenerational bracing breaths of air and of gulls, which in a wind like this day’s, must enjoy the feeling of flying at great speed while hovering motionless above the rails with food.
Part of the charm of these piers comes from the way they thread through the affluence of California with an ordinary workadayness fishermen pulling up their lines and crab bas¬kets, the Amtrak Pacific Surfliner croaking and clanking by in San Clemente and the rough wooden boards through which you can see the green water stirring in some places. A pod of dolphins might cruise by, a few sea lions might bark hoarsely from the pilings, and a pelican might patrol the long swells. For a moment — far from the suburbia, the freeways, Holly-wood and Los Angeles — it might all be a scene from Stein¬beck’s “Cannery Row.” In the mellow air under the creamy sky out over the water, all California seems to be a place of in-nocence.

I had never given much thought to the existence of piers, until this book. Somehow, I always took them for granted, including their part in defining California culture. What brought them to life were the sumptuous photographs and superlative descriptions of each individual pier, including their history and uses. Author Ed Grant had the wisdom to choose writers and photographers who knew these piers by "heart", it seems. Most of the piers are located in Southern California, and some are famous, especially the Malibu Pier, which makes its cameo appearance in classic Hollywood surf films, high-fashion photo shoots, and as a backdrop for many surfing legends.
As a Northern Californian who has not spent much time in the southern part of my state, I have only stood on two of the piers, so it was a revelation for me as to how many there are - and how each one differs from the other. The original intent, plus the attractions and features of the piers have changed through the years. It is interesting to read that certain piers were originally meant to disguise sewage pipes, or served as a docking stations for vessels. Along the way, some piers featured ferris wheels, aquariums, dancing halls, shops or restaurants. Fishing from a pier is a major use, of course. But instead of writing a book here myself, I challenge the reader of this review to enjoy the book for themselves. The character of each description is also a treat - "surfer's" terminology in one, to historically concise in another. The love and enjoyment of these structures comes through loud and clear in this "peerless" book on piers.
Piers of the California Coast by Ed Grant is a great book for anyone. California natives and visitors will be interested about the history of each pier. It is beautifully written and illustrated. This book gives some wonderful ideas of places to visit on vacations. A must read.
